Brian Current has conducted a wide range of contemporary repertoire from Ligeti and Varèse to George Benjamin and Magnus Lindberg. He has championed over 50 new works by Canadian composers including commissioned premieres by Scott Good, Andrew Staniland, Alice Ho, Robert Lemay, Linda Catlin Smith, and Omar Daniel. Through his international work as a composer he has brought many previously unheard pieces to Canada including music by Akira Nishimura, Enno Poppe, Fabien Levy and Stefan Niculescu. Described by The Globe and Mail as a conductor “with assurance and no undue fuss”, Brian has been repeatedly featured leading most new music ensembles in Toronto as well as the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra, the Windsor Symphony Orchestra and the Atelier La Voce dell’Arte in Milan, Italy. Since 2006 Brian has been the director of the New Music Ensemble of The Glenn Gould School (The Royal Conservatory). As a graduate student at UC Berkeley, Brian studied conducting with David Milnes and Michael Morgan and has taken part in masterclasses with international conducting figures Jorma Panula and Peter Eotvos.
As a composer, Brian Current is the recipient of several distinguished international prizes. His music has been programmed by all major orchestras in Canada and by dozens of outstanding ensembles, soloists and opera companies both at home and abroad.
Brian Current studied music at McGill University and UC Berkeley (PhD 2002). His music, lauded and broadcast in over 35 countries, has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Barlow Prize for Orchestral Music (USA), the Italian Premio Fedora for Chamber Opera, the Azrieli Commissioning Prize and a Selected Work (under 30) at the International Rostrum of Composers in Paris. Brian Current’s pieces have been programmed by all major symphony orchestras in Canada and by dozens of professional orchestras, ensembles and opera companies world-wide. He is in demand as a guest conductor and regularly leads programs of contemporary music.
