Both at home and abroad, Montréal pianist Louis-Philippe Pelletier is regarded as an artist of exceptional ability, known for the seriousness of his musical outlook, for his deeply intellectual curiosity and for the breadth of his repertory, which ranges from the Baroque to the contemporary. In the latter area he is a true master. Louis-Philippe Pelletier is a three-time winner of the Montréal Symphony’s Matinée auditions (1962, 1964 and 1966), and in 1968 he won first prize in piano at the Montréal Conservatory. Since that time he has given a great many recitals across Canada as well as in Europe, North Africa (Tunisia) and the United States. In 1979, he was the grand prize winner at the fourth international piano competition of the Arnold Schoenberg Festival in Rotterdam, and the following year was named Artist of the Year by the Canadian Music Council, along with Teresa Stratas. He has appeared as soloist with numerous orchestras and ensembles throughout Canada, Holland and Germany, and has been to international festivals in Canada, Europe, Mexico and Cuba. Mr. Pelletier has been the ambassador for many modern Québec composers such as Walter Boudreau (Les Planètes), Michel-Georges Brégent (Les Variations parallèles), Luc Marcel (Asiles, La Cité des Anges), and Claude Vivier, whose Shiraz was written for him and which he recorded and played often in public. In 2005, he gave three programs devoted to the Debussy Études; to the complete works of Schoenberg, Berg and Webern (winning him critical praise from the 1970s onward); and to the three Ives sonatas. In 2008, he played Messiaen at the Lanaudière Festival. For Louis-Philippe Pelletier, the instruction he received from the Ukrainian-born pianist Lubka Kolessa at the Montréal Conservatory, and from the French pianist Claude Helffer in Paris were the defining elements of his training. He in turn taught piano and analysis at the Université de Montréal, then served as associate professor at McGill University from 1978 to 2001. His large discography, which ranges from Beethoven and Schumann to Papineau-Couture and Cherney reflects the breadth of the repertory of this deeply humanitarian musician, one who also harbors a deep interest in philosophy, literature, painting and the sciences. “Whether he is playing Berg, Beethoven or Schumann, Louis-Philippe Pelletier has the ability to determine and recreate the mood of a piece. He can move splendidly from one composer to the next, from one era to another. —Carol Bergeron, Le Devoir May 2011 |
