Le Nouvel Ensemble Moderne

Founded in 1989 by pianist and conductor Lorraine Vaillancourt, the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne (NEM) is a chamber orchestra of 15 musicians. It delivers a convincing interpretation of today’s music by granting it the time and attention it deserves.

Reflecting a variety of aesthetics, its repertoire is open to music from all continents and dedicates a large amount of time to premieres. Its concerts, public rehearsals and meetings with the composers are all privileged moments for exchange and reflection.

Ensemble in residence at the Faculté de musique de l’Université de Montréal, the NEM has performed concerts in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Japan, Australia and Singapore, as well as in seven European countries (Austria, Belgium, England, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands). More than 125 works have been composed for the ensemble, including Jonathan Harvey’s Sringara Chaconne, Tristan Murail’s En moyenne et extrême raison and Denys Bouliane’s Rythmes et échos des rivages anticostiens.

The NEM’s discography comprises 25 CDs released on the labels ProNEM, ATMA and UMMUS (Montreal), Doberman-Yppan (Quebec City), New World Records, Composers Recording Inc (New York), Auvidis Montaigne (Paris), and ABC Classics (Australia). These albums have been produced in collaboration with the Faculté de musique de l’Université de Montréal, Ircam, Les Percussions de Strasbourg, the Musica 93 Festival, the Société Radio-Canada, Radio France and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

A member of the Conseil québécois de la musique (CQM), in residence at the Faculté de musique de l’Université de Montréal, the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne receives grants from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts de Montréal.

Pianist and conductor Lorraine Vaillancourt is a full professor at the Université de Montréal’s faculty of music. She has taught at the institution since 1971, and has led its contemporary music workshop since 1974.

Lorraine Vaillancourt regularly serves as guest conductor of numerous ensembles and orchestras worldwide. In Canada, she has conducted the Montréal Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre symphonique de Québec and Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal. Abroad, she has led the Ensemble Orchestral Contemporain (Lyon), Les Percussions de Strasbourg, Ensemble Sillages (Brest), Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice, Orchestre de Cannes, Orchestre national de la RAI (Turin), and the Gulbenkian Orchestra (Lisbon), among others.

Along with composers José Evangelista, John Rea and Claude Vivier, Lorraine Vaillancourt is a founding member of the Montreal-based concert society Les Événements du Neuf (1978 to 1989). In 1990, she was responsible for the publication of CIRCUIT, a North American magazine of contemporary music. President of the Conseil québécois de la musique (CQM) from 1998 to 2001, she then served on the board of directors of the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) until 2006. She is also a member of the Royal Society of Canada.

She has received numerous accolades for the quality of her work, both in Canada and abroad. In 2000, her recording of Hughes Dufourt’s Erewhon with the Alsatian ensemble Les Percussions de Strasbourg was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque from the Académie Charles Cros.
