The Orchestra Jakobsplatz Munich was founded in 2005 under the leadership of Daniel Grossmann, the current artistic director. Musicians from more than twenty countries currently play in the orchestra. The programming focuses on rarely played works by Jewish composers combined with music of the 20th and 21st centuries. The orchestra also commissions works with Jewish connections. Since 2007 the Orchestra Jakobsplatz Munich performs a regular concert series in the Hubert Burda Auditorium of the Munich Jewish Community Center. Beginning in the fall of 2009 the annual concert on the occasion of the Jewish New Year has been greatly anticipated by the community. The orchestra has engaged in a series of co-productions with the Bavarian State Theater. The staged performance of the chamber opera “The Kaiser of Atlantis or The Refusal of Death” by Viktor Ullmann was realized together with the Bavarian State Opera. A highlight in the young history of the orchestra was the benefit concert with Anne-Sophie Mutter, which received great notice far beyond Munich. With the opening of the Ninth Jewish Summer Festival in 2006 in Budapest the orchestra expanded its range internationally. The Orchestra Jakobsplatz Munich has performed with well-known soloists including Anne-Sophie Mutter, Sergey Leiferkus, Ann-Katrin Naidu, Kevin Conners and Tanja Becker-Bender. The first foreign tour of the Orchestra Jakobsplatz Munich took place in the fall of 2009 to Israel; the ensemble conducted by Daniel Grossmann played with the renowned cellist Adrian Brendel. The concerts in Kiryat Yam, Afula, Haifa, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv were a great success. A highlight of the 2010/11 season was an additional international tour including concerts in Moldavia, the Ukraine and Romania. For this trip the orchestra was able to engage Tanja Becker-Bender, one of the most noted violinists of the younger generation, as the soloist. In mid-February the Orchestra Jakobsplatz Munich played the original music by Paul Hindemith for Arnold Fanck’s film “Im Kampf mit dem Berg” to conclude the exhibition “Have you seen my Alps?” At the beginning of February in cooperation with the Bavarian State Opera Benjamin Fleischmann’s opera “Rothschilds Violin” with the star baritone Sergei Leiferkus and Sarah Nemtsov’s chamber opera “Herzland” were performed. A three-part concert series is planned for early summer, concentraiting on the works of Arnold Schönberg, including the Serenade op. 24, his orchestration for chamber orchestra of Lied von der der Erde and the second string quartet. The Orchestra Jakobsplatz Munich has already recorded two CDs for the label NEOS Music. In February 2008 a well-received recording included works by John Cage. In October 2009 an additional new release presented works of the Jewish composer Paul Ben-Haim, who has once again received significant attention in recent years. The cooperation with the label NEOS Music is ongoing. |
