Best of Canada's Young Orchestral Musicians Gather

Introducing The National Youth Orchestra of Canada's 2009 Orchestra

TORONTO, April 16 /CNW/ - With fierce competition and over 550
applications received from across the country, the National Youth Orchestra of
Canada (NYOC), Canada's preeminent training ground for young orchestral
musicians, has named the 100 students selected for this year's orchestra.
"Each of these young musicians has earned their much coveted place by
showing us that they are at the top of their game," says Barbara Smith,
executive director of the NYOC. "These aspiring young musicians train for
hours a day, have professional coaches, and are the very best Canada has to
offer. The role of the NYOC is to help them realize their full musical,
professional and personal potential. As the NYOC alumni make up approximately
one-third of Canada's professional orchestral musicians, all of our 2009
students will find themselves in good company."
Ranging in age from 14-28, these talented young musicians were chosen
from auditions held in major cities across the country in January. Students
were required to play a solo, orchestral excerpts and scales on their
instrument for a judging committee made up of a distinguished panel of
Canada's leading musicians, often NYOC alumni themselves.
In June, the 100-orchestra members will travel to the University of
Western Ontario in London for four weeks of intensive training. During this
time, they will receive professional instruction from Canada's top orchestral
musicians and have more practical hours of training than most universities
offer in a year.
The 2009 NYOC principal conductor will be Alain Trudel, who is no
stranger to Canadian orchestral music lovers. Mr. Trudel is currently
principal conductor of the new National Broadcast Orchestra (which replaced
the CBC Radio Orchestra) and principal guest conductor of the Victoria
Symphony Orchestra. He is also music director and conductor of l'Orchestre
symphonique de Laval and serves as artistic advisor to the Manitoba Chamber
Orchestra.
New this year, NYOC has added a resident chamber music faculty to its
summer training program. The Super Nova String Quartet features an all-star
roster of world-class Canadian talent: Jonathan Crow (violin), Mark Fewer
(violin), Douglas McNabney (viola) and Denise Djokic (cello). NYOC orchestral
string students who show exceptional ability and potential will have the
opportunity to form student chamber ensembles and work closely with the Super
Nova Quartet in coaching sessions, masterclasses and concerts.
In August, the NYOC will embark on a two-week tour across Ontario and
Quebec, performing at such venues as the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Notre
Dame Basilica in Montreal and Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto. TD Financial Group
continues as the official NYOC tour sponsor. In 2010, the NYOC will celebrate
its 50-year anniversary with a series of concerts across the country.

About National Youth Orchestra of Canada

The National Youth Orchestra of Canada is Canada's advanced orchestral
training institute for musicians ages 14 to 28. Our mission is to educate,
elevate, and empower Canada's most gifted young orchestral musicians.
The NYOC supports, strengthens and advances the art of orchestral music
in Canada through nationally prominent concert tours, recordings, outreach
activities, and through the performance and commissioning of Canadian music.
Over the years, the reviews and praise bestowed on the NYOC have been
nothing short of amazing. It was called "the best youth orchestra in the
world" at the World Youth Orchestra Conference in Tokyo. One third of Canada's
professional orchestral musicians got their start in the NYOC. For more
information on the NYOC, visit www.nyoc.org.
