Latitude45News - July 2009
July 7, 2009, 12:00 am Dear Friends and Music Lovers, NewsAlain Trudel tours with the NYOC Conductor Alain Trudel leads the National Youth Orchestra of Canada (NYOC) in this year's summer tour through Ontario and Quebec. Under his baton, the orchestra aims high: the repertoire features Gustav Mahler's "tragic" 6th symphony, Leonard Bernstein's Dances from Westside Story and the famous Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky. But the NYOC does not restrict itself to the big romantic and post-romantic repertoire; Alain Trudel makes it extend its reach, from classical to contemporary music. Contemporary repertoire includes Montreal-born Sammy Moussa's "Cyclus" and a commissioned piece by Toronto-based composer Rob Teehan, "Dreams of Flying". For the performance of a Haydn symphony, the orchestra will be split to a smaller, classical size. And finally, it will work on opera repertoire together with Canadian superstar soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian, to perform well-known Rossini arias at the opening night of the Stratford Summer Music Festival. www.latitude45arts.com/artists/view/alain_trudel www.nyoc.org NYOC performs online Alain Trudel not only expands the National Youth Orchestra's repertoire and stylistic range, but also its media presence: the NYOC will be the first Canadian youth orchestra to broadcast a concert via the internet. On August 2, 2009 a performance in partnership with McGill University Schulich School of Music will be streamed live on the web. Details of how to view the concert will be posted on www.nyoc.org. www.latitude45arts.com/artists/view/alain_trudel www.nyoc.org Mark Fewer goes down under Violinist Mark Fewer has recently been invited by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra to perform John Adams' concerto "The Dharma at Big Sur" for six string electric violin and orchestra in 2010. This will be the concerto's second premiere by Mark Fewer, who had already played the Canadian premiere with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in 2003. The concert is scheduled for May 1st, 2010; Brawell Tovey will conduct. www.latitude45arts.com/ artists/view/mark_fewer François Houle showcases at CAPACOA If you want to meet Vancouver-based clarinetist and composer François Houle in person, you get your chance at CAPACOA, the annual conference of the Canadian Arts Presenting Association in November in Calgary. François Houle has been selected among hundreds of applicants to showcase, and he will present excerpts from his program of Pan-American music, including works by Piazzolla, Guastavino, Copland, Bernstein, and himself. www.latitude45arts.com/artists/view/francois_houle www.francoishoule.ca Still more praise for Jenny Lin There is no end to praise for Jenny Lin's CD of Shostakovich's Preludes and Fugues (op. 87) on Hänssler. After enthusiastic reviews in Classics Today and German online magazine Klassik heute, the renowned German magazine FonoForum lauds her as well: "Even regarding solely her technique, Jenny Lin does not need to fear her competitors. Neither Ashkenazy, Sherbakov or Mustonen nor the elder ones; not even the composer himself. Precision, energy and intensity of her playing are constantly outstanding." Jenny Lin will celebrate the launch of this already successful CD with a CD release party at New York's prestigious Le Poisson Rouge on July 20th, where she will also perform a small selection of Shostakovich's pieces. www.latitude45arts.com/artists/view/jenny_lin www.jennylin.net www.lepoissonrouge.com Guy Livingston tours North America Pianist and media artist Guy Livingston has received a grant from the NFPK, the Dutch government's Performing Arts Fund, to support travel for his North America tour. The tour is scheduled for October 2009 and currently includes concerts and educational outreach in Chicago, Dayton/Ohio, Montreal, New York and Washington D.C., further dates and places to be added. www.latitude45arts.com/artists/view/guy_livingston www.guylivingston.com Artist of the MonthLucille Chung: a passion for excellence Since her debut with Charles Dutoit in 1989, Montreal-born pianist Lucille Chung has not ceased to impress. She graduated from both the Julliard and the Curtis Institute before she was twenty, and since then has performed an extensive concerto repertoire with orchestras all over the world, in recitals as a soloist or together with her duo partner and husband, Alessio Bax. But as much as she loves to push her mastery further, she loves sharing it with others to help them refine their own skills. Her summer schedule therefore is not only full of solo recitals at prestigious festivals like the Abbey Bach Festival in Oregon or the Verbier Festival in Switzerland; but much time is dedicated to a mixture of playing and teaching. As a faculty member of the Stony Brook International Piano Festival and the International Keyboard Festival at New York's Mannes College, she gives aspiring young students deeper insights into piano virtuosity. At the MusicFest Vancouver, she will perform a "Listener's Guide to Brahms and Ligeti" together with pianist Jane Coop, hosted by Espace musique presenter Sylvia L'Écuyer. This way, Lucille Chung acts not only as a pianist, but as an ambassador of excellent piano music. No wonder France Musique has chosen her as one of three interview partners for the radio program "Sur tous les tons", which will alternate live music and interviews from the Verbier Festival. Host will be the leading French music journalist Gaëlle le Gallic. And after summer? More playing, and more teaching, of course. And she will be busy recording; she signed an exclusive 3-year recording contract with Disques XXI-21/Universal this spring. Her first album featuring works by Saint-Saëns will be out in fall 2009. www.latitude45arts.com/artists/view/lucille_chung www.lucillechung.com Upcoming ToursOctober 2009: Guy Livingston, North America October 2009: Jenny Lin, Belgium January 2010: Kleztory, Belgium April/May 2010: Mark Fewer, Australia May 2010: Sanctuary Trio, Europe July 2010: Sanctuary Trio, Europe October 2010: Ramiro Gallo Quintet, North America October 2010: Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, Asia November 2010: Joelle Léandre and Dominique Boivin, tribute to John Cage, North America November 2010: Sanctuary Trio, Western US and Canada March/April 2011: Les Percussions de Strasbourg, North America April 2011: Arditti Quartet, North America For upcoming events, see our calendar on www.latitude45arts.com/calendars. |
