Artist of the MonthDesmond Hoebig: Returning to Houston One of North America's finest instrumentalists, cellist Desmond Hoebig has left his position as principal cellist of the Cleveland Orchestra "after six wonderful seasons", as he says, to become a full professor of Cello at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in Houston. This appointment will also allow him more time to pursue solo and concerto performance opportunities, which is great news for Latitude45. This new job marks Desmond Hoebig's second stint in Houston, where he served as principal cellist of the Houston Symphony, as well as Associate Professor of Cello at Rice prior to his appointment to the Cleveland Orchestra in 2003. For Desmond Hoebig, the decision to leave the Cleveland Orchestra was difficult, "I have absolutely adored my time here. I keep saying that I'm not leav¬ing Cleveland. Gosh -- I've played in professional orchestra for 24 years. This was an opportunity... With orchestral playing, it's a very, very busy, wonderful life. With teaching, I might have a little bit of control over what I take and what I don't..... I'm looking forward to hoping to have more opportunities to play chamber music." While the new school year is just beginning at Rice, Desmond Hoebig is already being sought out for solo recital engagements as well as concerto performances. During the 2010-2011 concert season, he will return to Cleveland for a performance on the prestigious Cleveland Chamber Music Society, as well as a performance of the Dvorak Concerto with the Victoria (BC) Symphony Orchestra; and other opportunities are in discussion. We are looking forward to hearing from him! www.latitude45arts.com/artists/view/hoebig Upcoming tours October 2009: Guy Livingston, North America October 2009: Jenny Lin, Belgium January 2010: Kleztory, Belgium For upcoming events, see our calendar on www.latitude45arts.com/calendars. |
