She has been recognized a world specialist on works for piano by Olivier Messiaen already long before his works got the attention of a broader audience. To celebrate the 100th birthday of Messiaen in 2008, Louise Bessette created “Automne Messiaen”, a three-month event in Montreal with lectures, concerts and recitals to further promote Messiaen’s work. Her recordings of Messiaen’s piano music, including “Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant-Jésus” and “Les oiseaux”, her latest Messiaen CD, have met unreserved praise by music critics. But Louise Bessette’s love for contemporary music is not restricted to this one great master. Being a highly sought-after chamber music partner, Louise Bessette has recorded and performed solo and ensemble works by Quebec composers Gilles Tremblay, Jacques Hétu and André Prévost, by Americans Carter, Cage, and Ives, and by the Italian Scelsi. She recently recorded music by Charles-Valentin Alkan for the soundtrack of the new French film by Julie Lopes-Curval, “Mères et filles”, starring Catherine Deneuve and Marie-Josée Croze. In her solo recitals, Louise Bessette loves to link the new with the old, as in her “Eternal Chimes” program, where she explores the importance of chimes and bells as a means of inspiration for composers from Grieg and Liszt to Pärt and Messiaen. Her engagement especially for contemporary Canadian music has earned Louise Bessette the nomination of one of 50 “Ambassadors of Canadian music” by the Canadian Music Centre for its 50th anniversary this year. A large part of her work in the next months will be dedicated to the work of Serge Arcuri. November 26 will see the world premiere of Arcuri’s new piano quintet “Le tumulte des flots” in Toronto, Louise Bessette joining forces with the Arditti Quartett. At the same time, Louise Bessette prepares a recording of Arcuri’s piano chamber music with other prolific chamber musicians like Latitude45 artists Yegor Dyachkov (cello) and Mark Fewer (violin), and more. The recording is scheduled for next spring and will be released by ATMA Classique. www.latitude45arts.com/artists/view/louise_bessette EventsNow touring: → Guy Livingston, North America → Jenny Lin, Belgium → Nadina Mackie Jackson and Guy Few, Western Canada To view the current list of all upcoming events, please visit our event calendar on www.latitude45arts.com/calendar. |
