THREE OPUS AWARDS FOR LATITUDE45 ARTISTS
At the thirteenth annual Opus Awards Gala on January 31, Latitude45 artists got not only one, but three awards. The Opus awards are presented by the Conseil québécois de la musique to highlight excellence in the world of concert music throughout Québec and are considered among the most prestigious Canadian music awards.
The "Concert of the Year" award in the classical, romantic, post-romantic and impressionist music category was presented to cellist Yegor Dyachkov and the Violons du Roy for their concert "Russian Impressions", featuring works by Glazunov, Shostakovich, and Ichmouratov.
Two awards went to pianist Louise Bessette. The "Automne Messiaen", a series of concerts and musical events which she had organized to celebrate the 100th anniversary of composer Olivier Messiaen in fall 2008, was named the "Musical Event of the Year". Louise Bessette herself was named "Performer of the Year", accompanied by a prize of $5000 from the Canada Council for the Arts.

NEW ON THE ROSTER: GABRIELA ORTIZ
New on Latitude45’s roster is Mexican composer Gabriela Ortiz, one of the foremost Latin American composers today. Her music has been characterized as both entertaining and sophisticated, achieving a balance between highly organized structure and improvisatory spontaneity. Her first opera, "Unicamente la verdad!", will be premiered in Mexico City on March 11, opening the Festival de Mexico. Labeled a "videopera", the work embraces narrative styles and elements from contemporary music, art video, tabloid journalism, analytical scholarship, popular Mexican music and, of course, opera.

JENNY LIN CONQUERS SPAIN
Pianist Jenny Lin, whose CD of Shostakovich Preludes and Fugues does not cease to earn thrilled reviews, is now under contract with the Spanish agency Producciones Artísticas Asturcón S.L. to further boost her presence on the Iberian peninsula. She already has strong bonds to Spain, having worked with Gijón conductor Oliver Díaz at the International Piano Festival in Gijón and for the musical documentary film "Cooking for Jenny". The partnership with Asturcón comes just at the right moment, as she plans to record the piano concerto by Xavier Montsalvatge later this year. Another Iberian recording, with piano pieces by Catalan composer Frederic Mompou, is to be released in spring.

LOUISE BESSETTE PAYS RESPECT TO GILLES TREMBLAY
Pianist Louise Bessette is deeply involved with the current season of the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ), dedicated to Québec composer Gilles Tremblay. In a concert on March 18, she explores Gilles Tremblay’s piano music from solo to concerto, performing - among others - his piano concert Envoi. A solo recital concert with the title "Solstice" (scheduled for October 22) juxtaposes four works by Tremblay with ten pieces of former students, newly written in his honor. Excerpts of this recital program will be performed at Domaine Forget in August 2010.

GESTURES OF THE NEM
The Nouvel Ensemble Moderne participates in the multidisciplinary music festival MusiMars 2010 of Montreal’s McGill University. This year’s festival under the motto "Gestural Music - Musical Gesture" explores the relationship between music and gesture, and between gesture and meaning. In a concert on March 3 featuring works from Handel’s "Agrippina" to Schoenberg’s "Pierrot Lunaire", the NEM performs French composer Philippe Leroux’ "Voi(Rex)" for voice, six instruments, and electronics.

KLEZTORY GOES SYMPHONIC
The Orchestre symphonique de Laval this month fulfils a wish of many listeners by renewing its cooperation with klezmer band Kleztory. The beneficial gala concert on March 9 and an additional concert on March 10 will lead the audience to the world of the European Jews and gypsies of the 19th century. In their authentic klezmer arrangements, Kleztory’s violin, guitar, accordion, clarinet and bass join the rich sound of the symphonic orchestra to produce music replete with heart-drenching melancholy and exuberant joy.

TAFELMUSIK ON BACH’S TRACES
In a new program, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Chamber Choir take audiences on a musical journey to the Leipzig of J. S. Bach. The concept follows the imaginative approach of the Galileo Project, which recently toured to the United States and is scheduled to premiere in Asia next fall. Featured works include large choral movements from Cantatas 137, 207, 30a and 118b, a variety of instrumental movements from trio sonatas, chorale settings, and arrangements from Bach’s keyboard works including the Goldberg Variations.

LISTEN TO LATITUDE45 ARTISTS ONLINE
CBC Radio 2’s "Concerts on Demand" series now contains three more concerts with Latitude45 artists.
Mark Fewer performed Astor Piazzolla’s "Four Seasons" in a concert with the NSO Sinfonia in his native St. John’s/Newfoundland in October 2009. Piazolla’s music is a hommage to Vivaldi's famous Four Seasons, painting the seasons of Buenos Aires in a fusion of tango, jazz, baroque and classical.

Louise Bessette and the Arditti Quartet can be heard in a concert presented by the Edmonton Chamber Music Society in November 2009, featuring works by Pascal Dusapin and Serge Arcuri. It was the second time ever that Arcuri's piano quintet was performed.

Artist of the Month

ALAIN TRUDEL: REACHING OUT FAR
Since starting his conducting career, Alain Trudel has made only big steps forward. With his engagement for the National Broadcast Orchestra of Canada, founded as the privately funded successor to the disbanded CBC Radio Orchestra, he has attained a permanent place in Canadian musical life. The orchestra’s start in September 2009 was met with much acclaim by listeners and critics throughout the country.
At the same time, Alain Trudel’s international scope is growing, too. In March he will give his US debut, conducting the Toledo Symphony in a program of Prokofiev, Rimsky-Korsakov and Glass on March 5. Some days later he is in Canada again, leading the Orchestre symphonique de Laval in a concert of klezmer music with electrifying klezmer band Kleztory. Later on, he’ll work with the Victoria Symphony, one program featuring Mendelssohn’s "Scottish" symphony and Schumann’s cello concerto, another combining Haydn’s daytime symphonies - No. 6 "Le Matin", No. 7 "Le Midi", and No. 8 "Le Soir" - with two bassoon concertos by Vivaldi. And for 2010-2011, a tour to Sweden is already scheduled, as well as engagements in St. Petersburg, Russia, in February 2011.
But outreach for Alain Trudel not only means geographical range, but also to reach a wide span of ages. For the 6th season in succession he is working with the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra, which in April will give a performance especially designed for young audiences age 5 to 12. Together with the Toronto Children’s choir, they will perform a selection of songs by popular American composer Aaron Copland.
