immersive digital performance

“In Lumens, there is no hierarchy between music and image. The duo seeks to combine the two types of expression into one, to the point that one can't separate the music from the images.”

Biography

Uniting Julien-Robert and Julien Compagne, Video Phase exists at the crossroads of music and digital arts. They presents a new kind of art form in which music is enhanced and brought to life with interactive visuals and technology. The result is an exhilarating synergy between what you hear and what you see.

Their most recent program, Lumens is an immersive, one hour multimedia performance. Fusing music, interactive visuals, and technology with multiple screens surrounding the audience, Julien and Julien use percussions, electronics, invented instruments, voice and even water to control the visual landscape like a gigantic musical video game.

Video Phase has won several prizes for Lumens (Mécènes Investis pour les arts 2016, Opus prize 2017), an excerpt of which has been adapted into a cutting-edge virtual reality experience.

In 2019-20, Video Phase will be touring throughout China and in South Korea with Lumens and their wildly popular adaptation for children and families.

Programmes and projects

Video Phase presents a new kind of art form in which music is enhanced and brought to life with interactive visuals and technology. The result is an exhilarating synergy between what you hear and what you see. The live interaction of sound and image creates a unique way of experiencing musical performance, and also offers the audience a new perspective on musical structure and relationships.

Lumens is an immersive, one hour multimedia performance. Fusing music, interactive visuals, and technology with multiple screens surrounding the audience, Julien and Julien use percussions, electronics, invented instruments, voice and even water to control the visual landscape like a gigantic musical video game. They seek to bring a sense of wonder and play to musical performance, inviting audiences in to the process of exploration and creation. Video Phase serves as a bridge for audiences to explore new music in an experience at once visceral, exhilarating, and joyful.

Lumens Game is the adaptation of Lumens for young audience. After the 45 minutes performance, we take the children behind the scene and we welcome them on stage to try and play with our invented instruments so they can play their own collective song!
