Video Phase

immersive digital performance

“In Lumens, there is no hierarchy between music and image. The duo seeks to combine the two types of expression into one, to the point that one can't separate the music from the images.”

About Video Phase

Uniting Julien-Robert and Julien Compagne, Video Phase exists at the crossroads of music and digital arts. They presents a new kind of art form in which music is enhanced and brought to life with interactive visuals and technology. The result is an exhilarating synergy between what you hear and what you see.

Their most recent program, Lumens is an immersive, one hour multimedia performance. Fusing music, interactive visuals, and technology with multiple screens surrounding the audience, Julien and Julien use percussions, electronics, invented instruments, voice and even water to control the visual landscape like a gigantic musical video game.

Lumens

Lumens is an immersive, one hour multimedia performance. Fusing music, interactive visuals, and technology with multiple screens surrounding the audience, Julien and Julien use percussions, electronics, invented instruments, voice and even water to control the visual landscape like a gigantic musical video game. They seek to bring a sense of wonder and play to musical performance, inviting audiences in to the process of exploration and creation. Video Phase serves as a bridge for audiences to explore new music in an experience at once visceral, exhilarating, and joyful.

Lumens Game

Lumens Game is the adaptation of Lumens for young audience. After the 45 minutes performance, we take the children behind the scene and we welcome them on stage to try and play with our invented instruments so they can play their own collective song!

The Multiverse (or « parallel universes ») is coming from a scientific theory which hypothesizes that is possible that there is an infinity of alternative, parallel versions of our universe. The idea is that there are some parallel realities which coexist as neighbouring realities, without any chance of crossing the boundaries between them. Inspired by this premise, Video Phase is creating a musical narrative which explores what we might learn if we could cross the boundaries of these parallel universes.

“A notable aspect of Video Phase's approach is their intention to make their works accessible through the visual aspects, balancing the slightly more niche style of their music.”
