Montreal’s classical string band collectif9 is proud to announce the U.S. premiere of their most recent film-concert The Night of the Flying Horses on July 8 at 7:30 PM (PDT). Presented by Ashland Chamber Music Concerts, this 60-minute programme pays tribute to several musical genres that are linked through the music of U.S.-based Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov, resulting in a creation that revisits five centuries of musical traditions. For this special premiere, the musicians of collectif9 have prepared a short video in which they highlight notable moments and challenges of the music presented. This exclusive video will directly precede the film-concert.

BROADCASTING ART IN A PANDEMIC

“Over the past year, we have put a lot of thought into how we could make the best of the current situation given the difficulty of presenting live concerts in the near future. After much consideration and brainstorming, our response was to create a series of recordings combining video of performance with cinematographic footage, recorded in the highest quality (like a visual album). We call them film-concerts, and this is how The Night of the Flying Horses came into creation”, explains Thibault Bertin-Maghit, artistic director and double bassist of collectif9.

A JOURNEY IN TIME AND SPACE

Each film-concert created by collectif9 has its own story, transporting the viewer to different places and centuries. The Night of the Flying Horses brings us on a journey through Europe and its musical traditions. This film-concert proposes a combination of musical flavors from all over Europe: music of the Romani musicians of the last 500 years brought to us by Sapo Perapaskero, the Baroque extravagance of François Couperin, and music from the 21st century by Osvaldo Golijov.
