MÉCÉNAT MUSICA ANNOUNCES ITS NEW COMPOSER IN RESIDENCE 2019-2020


Jaap Nico Hamburger has been named Mécénat Musica’s Composer in Residence 2019-2020. Jaap is in a unique position to bring Canadian culture to the world stage with his opera, “Goldwasser”. Jaap’s compositions include symphonies, solo concertos, chamber music works, and commissions from Discovery Channel, Rex Video London UK, Turning Point Ensemble, and Dutch Television. Since 2012, Jaap is a Canadian Music Centre Associate Composer.

Mécénat Musica has had a Composer in Residence program since 2014. Mécénat Musica Compositions’ scores and notes are provided to emerging Montreal, Québec, and Canadian artists, without royalties, in perpetuity. Outgoing Mécénat Musica Composer in Residence Matthias Maute Matthias Maute has composed 57 movements of Mécénat Musica Compositions for 113 emerging artists, featuring solo music, chamber music for ensembles and orchestral music with choir. Mécénat Musica has also filmed and presented 134 videos of Canadian composers’ works to 170+ countries.

Jaap’s appointment was announced by Jean Dupré, President and Director General of the Orchestre Métropolitain, at the rehearsal for the recording of Jaap Nico Hamburger’s Piano Concerto with the Orchestre Métropolitain, at Montréal’s Maison Symphonique with conductor Vincent de Kort, engineered by Leaf Music.

Jaap was born in Amsterdam and started his musical education at the age of three. He studied piano with Reuben Lifschitz, Alexandre Hrisanide and Youri Egorov. Early performances included the Brahms D-minor Concerto at the age of 13, and Mozart KV 488 at age 18. Jaap is a graduate from the Royal Sweelinck Conservatorium of Music, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, with a soloist degree in piano. He has lived in Canada since 2000.

Mécénat Musica is a cultural program created by donors for donors. Mécénat Musica encourages individuals to make an in-perpetuity donation of $25,000 to a cultural organization that is important to them and encourages philanthropic families to match these individuals’ donations with matching donations of $250,000 and $2,500,000. This is a major shift in cultural philanthropy which is unique in the world.
