—Halifax Chronicle Herald Premiered by the Elmer Iseler Singers in Toronto, in April, 2008, Peter-Anthony Togni’s Lamentations of Jeremiah, a concerto for bass clarinet and choir, was commissioned by the Canada Council for the Arts to honor its 50th anniversary. The prophet Jeremiah’s heart-rending life and true prophesies of dire warning went largely unheeded by those he sought to warn. “Lamentations of Jeremiah” — where grief meets hope — is truly a piece for modern times. Since 1989, Peter-Anthony Togni has received a steady stream of commissions for choral music, string orchestra, chamber music, concertos, film scores and solo organ and piano works. His compositions are regularly broadcast on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, as well as internationally. He is also well-known in Canada as a producer and host for the CBC. Founded in 1979 by the late Dr. Elmer Iseler and conducted by Artistic Director Lydia Adams, the Elmer Iseler Singers are one of Canada’s most illustrious professional choral ensembles. In recent years, Halifax’s own Jeff Reilly has emerged as a distinct and powerful voice in the field of improvised contemporary music. Lamentations of Jeremiah is now available for touring by Jeff Reilly and the Elmer Iseler Singers. A recording of the work was made by ECM Records in October following performances in Halifax and Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. |
