Tippett Quartet

Being conducted by Michael Tippett dressed in a flared powder blue suit and bright yellow trainers certainly made an impression on members of the Tippett quartet. Sir Michael Tippett died in 1998 and was such an inspirational musician that when the Tippett Quartet was formed in the same week, they decided to take his name.

Like their namesake, the Tippett Quartet draws inspiration from the past and future alike. They are committed to combining mainstream repertoire with contemporary works, and have been described as “bold and innovative…extraordinary technical accomplishment with flair and a bright communicative spark” (The Times).

The quartet made its Wigmore Hall debut in 1998, they have since performed at the BBC Proms, Cheltenham Festival, Three Choirs Festival, Chichester Festivities, Presteigne Festival, Spitalfields Festival, Dartington International Summer School and Lincoln International Festival. They have also performed at King’s Place, Purcell Room, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Bridgewater Hall, The Sage, Gateshead and regularly return to Wigmore Hall. The quartet frequently appears on BBC Radio 3 and has broadcast live performances on Radio Novi Sad, Serbia and Sveriges Radio (Swedish National Radio). The quartet has also been featured on ABC radio (Australia), Radio New Zealand, WNYC Radio (New York), Lyric FM (Ireland) and Radio France.

The Tippett Quartet combines clarity of execution and total commitment in their performances; their interpretations are stylistically varied, informed by the breadth of their repertoire. 2007 saw the start of a two- year project to record the complete Tippett string quartets for NAXOS. The quartet’s artistic approach makes them highly suited to the virtuosic demands of this repertoire as described in The Times: “their intent is serious, their execution compelling, their ensemble immaculate”.

The quartet has premiered works by composers including John Adams, Simon Holt, and Howard Goodall. They have also worked closely with Peter Maxwell Davies and Anthony Paine. The Tippetts’ partnership with Stephen Dodgson has led to the release of his complete chamber music works in four volumes for Dutton Epoch. As a result of the quartets relationship with Peter Shore, a descendent of Donald Tovey, they have made world premiere recordings of his chamber works for Guild Records. The Tippett Quartet has also released recordings for EMI Classics, Classic FM and for Peter Gabriel’s Real World label. The quartet’s impressive and diverse catalogue of recordings have not only topped the classical charts but also entered the pop charts. They have performed at the Royal Opera House collaborating with the Royal Ballet and had invitations to perform in France, Canada and the USA. They have collaborated with artists such as Lawrence Power, Kathy Stott, Matthew Trussler, Simon Crawford-Phillips, Phillip Dukes, Julian Bliss, David Owen Norris, Melvyn Tan, Ashley Wass and Craig Ogden.

The quartet has recently released a disc on NAXOS of piano quintets by Bax and Bridge with Ashley Wass, as well as a disk for Dutton Epoch of the complete Arnell string quartets to great critical acclaim. In the midst of their busy touring schedule, in 2011 the Tippett Quartet is celebrating the centenary of the birth of Bernard Hermann with an extensive tour across Britain and the release of ‘Bernard Herrmann: Psycho Suite’ on Signum. The Herrmann project has enabled the quartet to collaborate with renowned film studies professor Neil Sinyard and with Norma Herrmann, who granted special permission for the recording. The project has seen the quartet take up residencies at Perth Festival, and York St. John University.

Forthcoming highlights include recording the Rozsa string quartets and trio for Naxos this autumn, as well as returns to The Sage, Kings Place, and a tour to the USA and Canada.
